If there’s any professional in this world that get as bad a rap with adults as dentists do with children, it’s contractors.
“They’re late!”
“They nickel-and-dime ‘ya!”
“They lied to us!”
… and so on.
But before we share the full list of grievances we strive to avoid here at GreenFIT Homes, know this: nearly every issue can be avoided if the right questions are asked before you sign on the dotted line. Today, we’re going to break down those questions.
Ask These Questions Before Hiring a Contractor
Remember this: when it comes to contractors, the lowest price is often that way for a reason. Beware what you might be missing when it comes to the price gap. That being said, there’s no such thing as a stupid question — especially when it comes to building, retrofits, and other projects that affect the quality of your family’s home.
Ask these questions, and you’ll be on the path to creating a happy relationship with contractors you’ll want to hire again and again.
1. Where is your office located?
Office location might seem insultingly simple, but knowing that your contractor has a sound location protects you against fraud from any Joe Schmoe with a toolbelt pretending to be running a contracting business. Beware of contractors who only use PO boxes.
2. What licenses do you carry?
There are a range of licenses to be had in the contracting world depending on role and skill. Ask which license(s) your potential contractor carries, and you’ll learn where their technical aptitudes lie. Licenses are also a great indication of legitimacy and time spent learning — and earning recognition for — skills that can benefit your project.
3. Can you please provide a few references?
A real office and the right licenses — these things prove validity, but don’t necessarily add up the level of quality you need for your project. Don’t be afraid to ask for past client references and reach out to them. They’ll give you candid, honest feedback that the contractor might not even think to share. In addition, be sure to skim the internet for online reviews on sites like Houzz, Angie’s List, Porch, and more.
4. What are your payment terms?
Your John Hancock shouldn’t be gracing that dotted line until you have all your financial ducks in a row. Know what you’re getting into when it comes to payment schedules, due dates, and potential fees. Know what’s in the “fine print.”
5. Tell me more about your process.
Building and retrofit projects have the ability to take over your life while they’re happening — especially if they’re disrupting a major living area in your home. You want to know exactly what you’re getting into. Ask about timeframes; the order of phases and what comes first; if you’ll need to be present while the work is being done, and anything else that might affect your day-to-day life.
